Harrison Bergeron Was Not Fiction

Students who write well are being flagged as suspected AI users. The signal has been inverted: competence became evidence of cheating. This goes beyond schools.

A student wrote an essay about Harrison Bergeron, the Kurt Vonnegut short story about a society that punishes those who stand out. The essay was flagged as 18% AI-generated. The reason: a single word — "devoid." When they replaced it with "without," the score dropped to zero.

The student was forced to impoverish their own essay about a story that warns against the forced suppression of excellence.

According to Techdirt, this has become a pattern. Students who write well are being flagged as suspects. Those who write with errors and simple vocabulary pass without issue. The signal has been inverted. Competence became evidence of cheating.

But the real problem is not in schools.

It is in what these students will bring when they enter the job market.

Think about the corporate landscape a few years from now. The professional who delivers fast raises suspicion of having delegated everything to AI. The one who writes too well seems to have used a model. The one who presents a structured analysis has to prove the reasoning is theirs.

How do you show that you use AI to be more productive without looking like the AI did all the work? That question is already circulating in the hallways. It just does not have a name yet.

And there is a deeper layer that almost no one is addressing.

If being credible requires learning to make ourselves smaller, what does that do to the professional development of an entire generation?

Harrison Bergeron was science fiction. Published in 1961.

Sometimes science fiction does not predict the future. It just gets there first.
